Study: How does weight affect reproductive health?

Currently seeking healthy, female participants

This study will examine the relationship between follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and ovarian function. Findings from this study may help researchers understand ways to treat problems with fertility caused by obesity.

Study principal investigator: Dr. Alex Polotsky

Eligibility criteria

  • Be a healthy woman age 21-39.
  • Have a BMI greater than 30 or a BMI between 18 and 25.
  • Have regular menstrual cycles (25-40 days).
  • Not be currently using hormonal medications (like birth control medication).
  • Not be pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
  • Not have a history of PCOS or other chronic diseases affecting hormone production.
  • Not participate in more than 4 hours of strenuous exercise a week.

To be enrolled all participants must meet specific criteria. Only a clinical research staff member can determine eligibility.

Research study details

  • You will be compensated up to $675 for your time in the study.
  • Your participation will last for approximately 27 hours.
  • The study will require two clinic visits, including one overnight hospital stay.

Study: How does the food we eat impact our reproductive hormones?

Currently seeking healthy, female participants

This study aims to enhance understanding of why weight affects fertility by measuring how the foods we eat (namely high-fat foods) affect reproductive hormones. Findings from this study may help researchers understand how obese women can improve their production of reproductive hormones without extreme weight loss.

Study principal investigator: Dr. Nanette Santoro

Eligibility criteria

  • Be a healthy woman age 18-38.
  • Have a BMI between 18 and 25.
  • Have regular menstrual cycles (25-35 days).
  • Be able to eat only the foods provided by the study for one month (including dairy).
  • Not be currently using hormonal medications (like birth control medication).
  • Not be pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

To be enrolled all participants must meet specific criteria. Only a clinical research staff member can determine eligibility.

Research study details

  • You will be compensated up to $720 for your time in the study.
  • Your participation will last for approximately five menstrual cycles.
  • You will be provided with meals for one month and given a Fitbit Flex.
  • The study requires 11 clinic visits over the course of approximately six months.
