Medicaid Coverage & Fertility Treatment

Medicaid is an income-restricted, government-run health insurance program. Most insurance programs, including Medicaid, do not cover all fees associated with IVF or other fertility treatments.

Fertility services covered by Medicaid

Coverage for preconception services under Medicaid is very limited. However, Medicaid does cover fertility testing and an initial consultation with a reproductive specialist. A patient does not need a referral from a primary care doctor to seek these services.

The primary fertility services provided under Medicaid above are noted as “preconception care.” Once pregnancy has occurred, Medicaid also covers care before and after childbirth.

Fertility services not covered by Medicaid

Medicaid (and many other insurance types) does not cover any infertility or advanced reproductive treatments. This includes IVF (in vitro fertilization), egg freezing and preconception genetic screening.
