Pregnant Women Should Still Get A Flu Shot

A study claiming to have found a link between miscarriages and flu vaccines uses questionable methodology, say two CU doctors

Cassandra Roeca and Alex Polotsky of The University of Colorado Advanced Reproductive Medicine recently co-authored a letter to the editor published in Vaccine, a peer-reviewed professional journal for healthcare providers who administer vaccinations. The letter was written in response to a study previously published by the journal that suggests a link between early-term miscarriages and influenza vaccinations.

Citing several issues with the study design and data interpretation, the CU physicians concluded, “Given potential increase in morbidity and mortality for pregnant women, we hesitate to make routine recommendations to patients inquiring about influenza vaccination safety based on this study.”
