Natural Fertility Treatments
What you can do for health and wellness when trying to get pregnant
At University of Colorado Advanced Reproductive Medicine, we want all of our patients to get pregnant without intervention. Before turning to assisted reproductive treatments, learn more about how to improve your chances of getting pregnant with choices and practices that serve as natural fertility treatments. From nutrition to yoga, there are opportunities to improve your fertility and well-being.
Weight loss can improve fertility
In the general American population, nearly half of all fertility patients, male and female alike, are overweight, which makes it more difficult to achieve pregnancy. CU ARM has developed a science-backed weight loss program called WIFI (Wellness Interdisciplinary Fertility Initiative) specifically for fertility patients to improve the chances of getting pregnant. Follow the links below to pages with more detailed information on weight and infertility.
Nutrition as a natural fertility treatment
Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet that includes vitamins and nutrients is a big factor in getting pregnant and maintaining a healthy pregnancy. Additionally, the types of foods you eat can make a difference in maintaining a healthy weight. Following are great resources on nutrition and fertility.
Acupuncture for fertility
Many patients are interested in pursuing acupuncture in the hopes of enhancing their fertility. At CU ARM, we have acupuncture available prior to and following an embryo transfer during in vitro fertilization (IVF). Research shows that acupuncture may change the concentrations of endorphins in the brain, which in turn can help relieve stress and anxiety. This may provide an excellent alternative for stress reduction in women undergoing infertility treatment. See how it works below.
Stress & infertility
Infertility can be a physically taxing condition, but often the emotional aspects can be just as difficult. It is common to feel stress in the form of sadness, guilt, anger and anxiety. Personal life, relationships, self-esteem and even self-image may be significantly affected. Check out these resources.
Yoga and conception
Yoga as a treatment for infertility has not been well studied. Yoga focuses not only on stretching and toning muscles as a physical exercise for the body, but also as a way to exercise and improve mental and emotional well-being, which can have a direct bearing on conception.
